The Mexican
shrimp industry

Many developments have been occuring since the 30's, when
the exploitation of the fishery resources started in Mexico.
Shrimp is one of those main resources. Starting from an
artisanal-scale explotiation, the country has developed
its industry to become one of the main suppliers to the
world market. The article presents a review of the development
of Mexican shrimp culture, an provides a qualified point
of view on how some factors should be improved in order
to remain at its current privileged place.
From Pelotas to Caxias do Sul: The fish market along
the rute BR 106.

(Note: the article is written in Portuguese, the second
official language of INFOPESCA) A very popular rute, which
runs along the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, links
many cities. The latter account for 3.5 million people.
In the line of the research series on fish market for
the main Latin American cities, there are other Brazilian
cities besides those which have already been the subject
of previous surveys. The area under consideration is of
particular relevance since it is the most inmediate market
for the local processing industry, which, while passing
throug a difficult moment, still tries to upgrade its
production.

International Conference on Fisheries Monitoring, Control
and Surveillance .

The National Fishery Service of Chile (SERNAPESCA), with
the support of FAO, organized in Santiago, from 25-26
April, the International Conference on Fisheries Monitoring,
Control and Surveillance. The conference was attended
by participants from 15 countries and 5 international
organisations. The Declaration "Santiago 2000",
on Responsible Fisheries, emerged from that meeeting,
and it is reproduced in this article.

An overview of the comercial acquacuture in Argentina

Although acquaculture has a long history in many countries,
the activity is only incipient in Argentina. However,
the salmonids and silversides breeding in lakes, lagoons
and dams has been undertaken by the State since the
beginning of the last century. The industrial acquaculture
in Argentina started only in the 80's, although there
is already much way done.
The role of women in the fishery sector

In general, the "woman in fishery" is associated
with that who waits for her husband to return from the
sea after a working day, and then undertakes the task
of selling the fish. The article demonstrates not only
how mistaken and partial the idea is, but also describes
the work done by INFOPESCA in trying to associate them
within a regional network.
