HONG KONG:
RECENT TRENDS IN THE SEAFOOD TRADE
By Sudari Pawiro
Hong Kong (SAR), long regarded as an important seafood
trading center in the region, importing and re-exporting
fishery products, is of late importing more for local
consumption. Nevertheless, it is expected to remain an
important trading center especially as a distribution

LATINAMERICA: A SOURCE OF SHRIMP
By Santiago Caro
A number of shrimp species make up the wealthy fishery
resources of the wide Latin America and Caribbean regions.
While there are well-developed fleets for wild shrimp
fisheries in many countries, the shrimp farming industry
has been experiencing a dramatic growth in some countries
during the last 15 years. This has resulted, for instance,
that Ecuador is at the top of the shrimp producers list
in the West World, and in the third place in the global
list. The industry has accompanied in a large extend such
a growth. However, the last few years have been plenty
of very serious problems, which represent a major challenge
for this sector.
HACCP AND AQUACULTURE: ITS APLICATION IN THE DEVELOPING
COUNTRIES
By Carlos Alberto Lima dos Santos
The HACCP system is being used in more and more countries,
both for producing and inspecting fishery products. The
HACCP concept is applied throughout the whole productive
chain, from the primary production to final consumer,
and its use must be based on the scientific evidence that
there are certain risks to human health. However, the
HACCP application on aquaculture products in the developing
countries, is taking place at an extremely slow pace,
except for the case of some few countries and certain
high-valued products. This article provides a review on
both national and international efforts regarding the
global tendencies, as well as the answers from the developing
countries to the HACCP application and its requirements.
SUSTAINABLE SHRIMP FARMING: A NEW TECNOLOGY
By Francoise Falaise and Louis Boel
In a very particular style and with a strong passion,
the authors expose their experiences on artificial shrimp
farming that have been developed within environments where
nobody could ever imagine some years ago. Although it
has been developed in the Middle East, it is always useful
to know about the success obtained in more-adverse conditions
than those of our countries.
BACTERIA AS A SUPPLEMENTARY FEED IN AQUACULTURE
By Dhivendra Kumar and Ram Savan
Suitable species of bacteria can be utilized as supplementary
feeds in aquaculture. The bacteria can be used for the
direct feeding of culture organisms or for the feeding
of live food organisms.
IMPACT OF SHRIMP CULTURE ON MANGROVES
By Piamsak Menasveta and Arlo Fast
According to the authors, the extensive shrimp culture
system shich were normally built in the mangrove forests
contributed greatly to their destruction. Intensive system
using pumps for water exchange are considered more mangrove
friendly and should be promoted.
THE IMPORTANCE
FOR LATIN AMERICA OF THE ANTARCTIC FISHERIES: A LAST GOAL
TO CONQUER
By Roland C. Wiefels
The Antarctica is closer to South America than to any
other continent. A wide ring of marine waters, made up
by the three major southern oceans, encircles the white
continent and hosts many marine resources, which started
to be investigated only in this century. Some of them
are fishery resources with a high commercial or nutritive
value. This article provides the geographic, productive
and commercial features of those resources, highlighting
the great potential that they represent for the South
American nations.
