The world market for tuna. Review and update.

Tuna constitutes a fishing group that gathers practically all the aspects generally involved with fisheries, namely biology, policy, and trade. When understanding the tuna fishery, one finally understands a major chapter of fishery as a producing and international activity. This article addresses the main species and their destination, by analysing the market behaviour of tuna and tuna products in the main buying countries.

It took a very long time for some countries to realise that, unless strict conservation meaures were taken, fishing resources would start to decline. While developed countries were the first to suffer this problem, it was in the developing world where good results were achieved after having applied correct managament plans. It is also interesting to note how fishing stocks react after catches are limited.

A new regional development project is launched. This time, tilapia.

INFOPESCA achieved an agreement with the Common Fund for Commodities (CFC) through the FAO Sub-Committee of Fisheries, to undertake the project "Development of Processing and Marketing of Tilapia produced in big Latin American River Basins". This project will be undertaken in Brazilian North-East and in Venezuela, and its launching was recently realized in cities of both countries, with the presence of national authorities of each country, together with staff members of FAO, CFC and INFOPESCA.
